CFP: The DataRes Symposium (future of research data management)

CFP: The DataRes Symposium (future of research data management)

The Council on Library and Information Resources (CLIR), the University of North Texas Libraries, and the UNT College of Information invite submissions for the DataRes Symposium.

A half-day open conference, the DataRes Symposium will provide a forum for peer-reviewed papers and discussion concerning the future of research data management in the LIS field. The symposium will be held on Monday, December 10th, 2012 in Washington D.C., as a pre-conference to the December CNI Membership Meeting.

The DataRes Symposium invites papers addressing the following broad topics in data management:
How will the “data deluge” change the way libraries, library and information schools, and data repositories interact with researchers?
What are the challenges in terms of technology and infrastructure that libraries face to support research data management?
How do mandates from funding agencies affect libraries, and how can libraries best respond to these demands?
How can library and information schools better prepare future information professionals to address data management needs?
How can library and information schools better collaborate across disciplinary and institutional boundaries to respond to the data management needs of researchers?
How can research universities respond to the challenges of research data management in terms of policy, infrastructure, and support services? How can these responses be implemented in ways that are meaningful and sustainable across the institution?

We challenge presenters to think speculatively and broadly about the future of their field. As such, we are not looking for show-n-tell procedural stories from individual institutions, but rather comparative research analyzing the interventions of multiple institutions to evaluate and prescribe best practices for the future of data management.

Papers for the symposium will be subject to peer review. Final papers will be published in a CLIR report and made available via an open access website.

Please submit abstracts not to exceed 250 words by May 15, 2012 to:

Initial acceptance notifications will be made by June 15, with final papers due October 31, 2012.

The DataRes Project, funded by a Laura Bush 21st Century Librarian Program grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services, investigates how the library and information science (LIS) profession can best respond to emerging needs of research data management in universities. DataRes is a collaboration between the University of North Texas Libraries, the UNT College of Information, and the Council on Library and Information Resources.
